Homemade Halloween Decorations Using Newspaper and Other Items around the House

It is time to decorate your house for Halloween! Part of the fun of Halloween is the creativity used to create the costumes and decorations for the holiday. This is a great time to teach kids about recycling as well, as you look for things you can do using just the items you find around the house. Newspaper, pop bottles, and wire hangers are just a few great tools for conjuring up some scary fun.

A Collection of Heads

You and your kids will have a lot of fun making a scary set of heads to post on the front porch. These heads are made of balloons, newspaper, and paste made of flour and glue. Decorative markers or paint can be used to decorate your heads.

To prepare to make your spooky heads, you will want to rip up strips of newspaper; you will need quite a few. For this project, it is a good idea to avoid the heavy glossy flyers and only use newsprint. Next, make a paste with about two tablespoons of water and two cups of flour. Mix it well, and then add a little water at a time until it is the consistency you desire.

Blow up a round balloon for each head you wish to make. Now you will paper mache your balloon by brushing paste over strips of newspaper. Once your balloon is thoroughly covered in a several layers, you should set it aside to dry. Then you can decorate it as you choose, using paints, markers, or other embellishments.

Easy Pop Bottle Ghosts

Using pop bottles of various sizes, you can design a host of ghosts for your Halloween home. You will need pop bottles that have been washed thoroughly, ping pong balls or similarly sized Styrofoam balls, white cloth, and string.

Glue a ping pong ball to the top of each pop bottle. Cut circle of cloth so that the radius of your circle is the same length as the height of the bottle. Drape the cloth over the bottle and tie with string below the ball to make a head. You can use markers or other items to make faces on your ghosts

Creepy Cracker Box Pinatas

If you are going to host a Halloween party this year, you do not have to invest in a store made piñata. Fill a large cracker box with candy and glue it shut. Then decorate it with construction paper, markers, and other household items to make it look like a monster, ghost, or whatever you like. The piñata will be the life of your party!
