Saving Energy Facts and Myths
How To Save Energy
It is not easy to know when we are taking the proper steps to save energy when there are so many mixed messages in the media today. However, with a little research, you can separate fact from fiction so you know when you are truly doing the right thing for the environment and for your pocketbook.
Recycling
Saving energy is based, at least in part, on conserving our non-renewable resources, and recycling is a large part of that effort. The materials used to make paper and plastic are resources that will not last forever, and the energy used to produce these materials burns even more of these resources.
However, Critics Of Recycling Have Made These Assertions:
• It takes more energy to recycle than it does to make new products.
• It takes more energy to wash out cans and bottles for recycling than it does to recycle them.
The fact is that the recycling process does, indeed, burn energy, but recycling products conserves water and materials in huge amounts, substantially slowing the consumption of our non-renewable resources.
As for washing out your cans and bottles, if you are strategic about your water use and wash your recyclable containers while cleaning up the kitchen after dinner, you will be using the same energy and resources that you would be anyway.

Solar Energy
It has been proven again and again that using renewable resources like solar energy and wind to light and heat our homes saves a great deal of energy and money. However, most of us have hesitated in adding solar panels for homes because of the myths surrounding this power source:
• Installing solar panels for homes is too expensive and will not save you any money.
• The process of using solar energy is inefficient and inconsistent.
• Solar panels are ugly.
Thanks to incentive programs offered in every state, homeowners can receive around 30% of their expenditures in rebates; in addition, the cost of installing solar panels for homes has come down over the years thanks to advances in technology. The total cost of purchase and installation of a solar energy system is attainable by most homeowners and will be readily recouped in energy savings over the next year.
Solar energy technology has advanced over the years, and solar energy collectors are far more efficient and consistent than they were in the 1970’s. A home powered by solar panels for homes today is consistently efficiently heated and lighted with few or no interruptions. This same technology has developed smaller, less imposing solar panels that are not immediately obvious or offensive to the eye.
Hybrid Cars
A great way to conserve energy and to save money is to drive an innovative hybrid car. Be careful what you read and believe about these modern energy saving automobiles. Here are a few of the myths you may have heard:
• Hybrid cars are too expensive to buy.
• You have to plug in your hybrid.
First of all, hybrids do not require charging at an electrical outlet. The gas engine transfers electric power to the engine every time the brake is applied, thereby constantly charging the battery.
The average hybrid car sells for around $22,000, about the same as many gas powered automobiles. Additionally, the resale prices on these cars remain high, keeping lease prices reasonable.
